Final-year medical student  ·  writer  ·  builder  ·  Abuja, Nigeria

I build things that keep people from getting scattered.

Some call me BlvckFlower. Sometimes I’m The Janitor — best job in the world; you get keys to every room and nobody watches you work. I don’t fit one category, and I stopped trying to a while ago.

Selected work

Six things built and shipped, each for a problem that happened to be in front of me. None of them started as a portfolio piece.

    Iqraاقرأ

    “The Qur’an you understand.”

Iqra's home screen, with the comprehension meter and today's session

The usual approach is the text on one side, a translation on the other, and you left to bridge the gap yourself for the rest of your life. Iqra starts from a different number.

About 845 high-frequency words — the ones in Al-Fātiḥah and Juz’ 30 — cover roughly 72% of the Qur’an’s 77,429 word occurrences. Learn those and the text stops being opaque.

A session chains vocabulary, a short passage and review — small enough to do daily, which is the only schedule anyone actually keeps. Words are taught by root, spaced repetition handles retention, and harakāt can be switched off once a reader is ready to face the bare letters. It presents itself as a quiet companion rather than a course, which is the right posture for something meant to be done for years.

    Paediatrics Clinical Calculator

Fluids and doses — a different number for every child.

The paediatric calculator showing a maintenance fluid result for a 14 kg child

Two weight-based calculations, both redone from scratch for every child: maintenance IV fluids, and drug doses. Adult dosing is largely a number you learn once. Paediatric dosing is arithmetic you do again at every bedside, under time pressure, often from memory or from a laminated card that has been photocopied four times.

The failure mode is not subtle. A decimal in the wrong place is a tenfold overdose, in the patients least able to absorb one.

Enter 14 kg and it returns 1,200 mL over 24 hours — 50 mL/hour — and names the fluid: 4.3% dextrose in 0.18% saline. Then it refuses to let you add potassium until urine output has been confirmed, which is the part that matters. A calculator that only computes is a slide rule. One that knows what you must not do yet is a colleague.

Built by someone who had to do the arithmetic himself, on the ward, which is the whole argument for it: the person who felt the problem is the person who shipped the fix.

    Al-Ibrab Memorial School

“Where every child is welcome, and every child is known.”

    The Al-Ibrab Memorial School site

A primary and secondary school in Tudun Murtala, Kano, founded in 2020 for orphans and less-privileged children. The site carries admissions and fundraising at the same time, which are two very different asks sharing one page.

The hard part of a fundraising site is making the ask legible: nobody gives until they know what the money buys. So the fees are broken down to the naira — ₦25,000 tuition, ₦5,000 uniform, shoes and books — and the giving tiers are denominated in children rather than currency. ₦10,000 is a term. ₦30,000 is a year. ₦150,000 is five children for a year.

    Afegbua Family Directory

A lineage larger than any one memory.

The Afegbua Family Directory sign-in screen

Over a thousand people, mapped. Past a certain size a family stops being something anyone can hold in their head and quietly becomes an information problem — and nobody notices it has become one until the connections have already gone cold.

Access-controlled on purpose: a shared family login rather than a public page, because a directory of a thousand living people is not something to leave open to the internet.

    LIMITLESS

A class about to scatter, on a known date.

The LIMITLESS Class of 2024 yearbook

Graduation has a date on it. After that everyone is somewhere else, and the year the class actually spent together survives only in whoever bothered to keep it. Built so it outlasts the week it ended.

214 members published, one card each — plus Superlatives the class votes on, and Chronicles: essays from the wards. That last section is where a yearbook stops being a photo album.

    Daily Acumen

    Specification, in full: cool.

Daily Acumen, with three tasks on the day's list

A to-do app is the most-built thing on the internet, which makes it a pure design problem — there is nothing left to invent in the feature list, so the only thing separating one from another is how it feels to use. “Cool” is a real requirement, and a harder one to satisfy than it sounds.

“They’re the same project. I only noticed when I wrote them down in a row.”

A scripture, a school, a lineage, a graduating class. Four of the six take something a group of people hold in common and make sure nobody gets locked out of it or lost from it. The other two are tools — one for a ward, one for a day. That’s the work, and one of them says it better than I just did: every child is known.

All six shipped while I was working through a final year of medicine. The honest explanation is leverage: I work with AI roughly the way I’d work with a very fast house officer — it covers ground quickly, and I decide what gets built and whether what came back is actually right. Medicine trains you for that second part. It has roughly tripled what I can finish.

Writing

Twelve dispatches since March, at Pulse & Punchlines: Naija Medschool Madness. They go out when there’s something to say, not on a schedule — I tried a schedule once and it read like a form.

Also writes for Superteam Nigeria and Web3Nigeria — the same job in a different vocabulary: work out what is actually going on, then say it plainly.

“I don’t have a style. I think mine just hasn’t been discovered yet.”

The writing came out of micro-traumas survived, with nostalgia, wit, and — by my own accounting — maybe sarcasm. Society believes every writer needs a declared style. I’m not in a hurry about it.

  1. 01 The Ceiling Still Needs Painting The end of a four-month paediatrics rotation — logbook signatures, one child recovered and another not — and a walk home that nearly stepped on a frog. It opens: “Four months. Four long, relentless months.” 26 Aug 2026
  2. 02 Heads, They Live. Tails, They Become a Memory. Paediatric HIV as a coin toss. The argument underneath is that what endangers these children most is the shame around them, not the virus. 30 Jul 2026
  3. 03 The One Who Burns the Village A young man burns down his own community. The essay works backwards from there — through neglect, joblessness and violence — to the adults who were supposed to be the village. 27 Jun 2026

Every piece began as something seen and written down nowhere official. The essay is where it finally got written down.

The shelf

Seven books worth handing someone. A recommendation without a reason is just a title, so each one still needs a line from me on when to hand it over — that line is the actual recommendation.

  1. 01 There Was a Country Chinua Achebe A personal history of Biafra, and of the Nigeria that came before it. 2012
  2. 02 Be(com)ing Nigerian: A Guide Elnathan John Satirical field sketches of Nigerian political and social types. 2019
  3. 03 Why Greatness Cannot Be Planned Kenneth O. Stanley & Joel Lehman An argument out of AI research that objectives obstruct achievement — that open-ended search beats goal-setting. 2015
  4. 04 The Alchemist Paulo Coelho A shepherd’s journey to Egypt; a fable about following what the book calls a Personal Legend. 1988
  5. 05 The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari Robin Sharma A burnt-out lawyer’s fable about purpose and discipline. 1997
  6. 06 The 5 AM Club Robin Sharma A morning-routine framework, delivered as a parable. 2018
  7. 07 As a Man Thinketh James Allen A short Edwardian essay on thought shaping character and circumstance. 1903

Listed in the order they ought to be read, which is not the order I read them. The reasons are still mine to write.

Still unwritten

There’s a part of me that’s still unexplored. I’m leaving this page blank — hopefully I live long enough to fill it.
